Five Traps in Enterprise System Integration

However complete the API documentation is, integration usually stalls on field semantics, timeouts and repeated pushes.

We have integrated ERP, MES, accounting software and various SaaS products over the years. Nearly every project gets stuck for two or three days on an interface that looked trivial. These five traps come up most often.

The five

Different meanings for the same field name. Their 'order number' is a daily serial, so duplicates appear every day. Confirm semantics field by field, not just labels.

Time zones. They return local time strings, we parse as UTC, and every record shifts by eight hours.

Timeouts and retries. Their average response is three seconds, our default timeout is five, peak hours fail en masse, and retries write duplicates.

Repeated pushes. Their compensation job sends the same record three times. Without an idempotency key, data goes bad.

Inconsistent status codes. Business failures also return HTTP 200, so checking only the status hides half the errors.

Our integration checklist

Every integration starts with a field mapping table: meaning, type, allowed values, required or not, signed off by both sides.

In the test environment we simulate three failures: timeout, duplicate and partial success. Passing those makes launch far calmer.

Integration projects rarely fail on technical difficulty. They fail when two teams read the same sentence differently.
