The Watershed for Vertical Products: Writing Industry Defaults into the System
Vertical is not a new industry label on a generic product. The real barrier is understanding and carrying the default rules that practitioners take for granted.
We should build a vertical SaaS too has become one of the most common statements in recent years. What actually creates distance, however, is not renaming a generic product after an industry. It is whether the default rules of that industry can be written precisely into the product model.
Industry defaults determine product shape
Peak hours and table turnover in restaurants, inventory and shrinkage in retail, scheduling and lesson consumption in education, property viewings and registration in real estate — these rules are rarely written into requirement documents, yet practitioners follow them every day. A product that does not understand them can only compensate with heavy configuration and manual coordination.
- A restaurant system must know whether payment comes before preparation or after;
- A retail system must distinguish whether stock is deducted at order placement or at shipment;
- An education system must be able to explain how lesson hours are calculated after a leave request.
Configuration is not understanding
Many products sell flexibility as a feature. But if the configuration options themselves do not carry industry meaning, customers still need extensive training to use them. A genuinely usable vertical product ships with the industry's most common practice as the default, so customers only change the exceptions.
Three criteria
- Can frontline staff complete high-frequency operations without reading a manual;
- Can exception flows be expressed inside the system instead of falling back to offline work;
- Do data definitions match industry conventions so they can be used directly for reconciliation and review.
The barrier of a vertical product is not the number of features, but the depth of understanding of industry defaults.
When a product naturally carries these rules, customers do not feel they are getting another system. They feel this team understands how we do business.
