Managing Founder Anxiety
Anxiety does not disappear, but it can be scheduled. Turning it into concrete questions makes it workable.
In year seven I still get tense when payroll comes around. The difference is that the tension used to last a week and now lasts an evening.
Write the anxiety down
What drains people is vagueness. Write it as a sentence, such as 'next month's collection is uncertain' or 'a core developer may leave', and it turns from a mood into a task.
Review the list for half an hour each week. Act on what can be acted on, mark the rest for observation, cross out the rest.
Three things that genuinely help
Three months of cash reserves is the most effective anti-anxiety drug available.
A monthly conversation with a peer founder about running a business, not about deals, usually reveals how similar the problems are.
Exercise. It sounds like a cliché, but it is the only thing that reliably lowers physical tension.
Anxiety means you care. The danger is not the feeling, it is making rushed decisions because of it.
