Digital Budgeting Without Waste
Misallocated budgets waste even the best systems. Some allocation lessons from practice.
Every year-end companies draft digital budgets. We have seen budgets concentrated on hardware and software with nothing for implementation, training or operations, and systems abandoned within a year.
A reference ratio
Roughly fifty-thirty-twenty across build, implement and run: build covers development and purchase, implementation covers process mapping, data migration and training, run covers maintenance and iteration.
Many firms actually run eight-one-one or even nine-one-zero. Underinvestment in implementation is the main reason new systems go unused.
The ratio is not sacred, but list all three so the structure is visible and problems surface.
Specific suggestions
Keep about ten percent as exploration budget for pilots and new scenarios, where failure is acceptable.
Budget data governance separately: master data, coding and quality checks are invisible infrastructure deciding how far systems go.
Reserve headcount for operations. Launch is only the beginning; without owners, any budget drains away.
A budget matters for whether its structure supports operation, not its size. Beyond visible software and hardware, implementation and operations decide the outcome.
