Exporters: Independent Site or Marketplace?
Independent sites and marketplaces are not either-or, though many firms treat them that way.
Several exporters we met recently are agonising over this choice. Marketplaces bring traffic but rule your fate; independent sites are autonomous but hard to grow. The answer depends on product and stage, not on which is more modern.
The marketplace reality
Marketplaces deliver enquiries immediately, but competition is homogeneous and price wars are hard to avoid.
Rule changes can decide survival: one firm lost half its orders after a single policy shift.
Customer data belongs to the platform, leaving little room for second-round marketing.
The independent-site reality
An independent site needs sustained content and promotion budgets, usually showing results over six months.
It suits firms with differentiated products willing to build a brand. Pure commodity factories rarely make it work.
The site is not the point; the content pipeline and follow-up process are.
A more realistic path
Most firms should run both: marketplace for cash flow, site for brand and long-tail customers.
Share content and customer data across the two rather than building separate stacks.
Weight the budget towards the marketplace early and rebalance as the site starts working.
Channel choice has no universal answer, only one that matches product and stage. Treat it as a strategy question rather than chasing fashion.
