Team Building Is Not Just Dinner

We ate many dinners and relationships did not improve. Now we work in the morning and play in the afternoon.

Team building carries baggage in many teams: weekends taken, forced socialising, more exhaustion than before. We tried pure dinners and long trips with little effect. Today it is half a day of work plus half a day of something fun.

How it works now

Weekdays only, never weekends. Borrowing rest days spends goodwill by itself.

Mornings cover big-picture topics: direction for the next half year, what we want and do not want. Afternoons are light activities.

Attendance is optional. Hiking or going home to the kids are both fine.

Why it works better

There is shared material. The morning's discussion naturally continues over lunch.

Time is bounded: half a day ends without exhaustion or lodging logistics.

Relationships form naturally. Doing something concrete beats arranged icebreaker games.

Good team building is not manufactured excitement; it is giving the team an unhurried setting where relationships grow on their own.
